The operational and architectural structure of the design draws inspiration from a layered display structure. Layers represent individual functions of the library (areas for visitors, entrance, offices, daylight distribution, traffic areas, and depositories). The layers are arranged logically to ensure that individual functions interconnect and cooperate effectively. The operation is perpendicular to the individual layers divided by large steel “nets”, which also serve as the load bearing structure of the library. The library is a precisely structured building – a “machine for processing and distributing information”.
